Hurricane Harvey destroyed many things in it's path, and along with the destruction it helped expose the fear that many undocumented citizens had. I call them citizens because for most of them , just like myself, only knows America as home. But when people choose a high possibility of dying over shelter that proves how far America has to go in order to truly become a melting pot and the "land of the free". When watching the news, I learned of this. The government begged people to come seek shelter, but a lot of people assumed there was a catch. If they were to go, and not be documented, after the Hurricane will they have to go back to a place that they don't consider home? Some people chose to stay home and face the wrath of a hurricane rather then the unethical wrath of the government.
If you a familiar with Latina pop culture, then you possibly remember the late great singer Selena. Some of Selena's family was affected by Harvey. There is a movie about Selena's life, and you would know that she isn't originally from Mexico. However picture this: Selena still living, undocumented, and now facing the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. The music industry was distraught when we lost Selena years prior to this hurricane. But what if we had to lose her to this. All these citizens are just like a Selena. Some how some way they have contributed to our society. Without them, things won't be the same. I hope that one day, people won't have to choose Death over deportation Instead they can seek shelter with the other citizens of this nation and live to help rebuild whatever is lost. I hope one day deportation to a place that was never your home won't ever be a threat that keep constantly in fear. There are natural disasters occurring that people already fear. Hopefully soon, the government won't be another disater that's the citizens who helped create it fear as well.
